On Disappointment

DISAPPOINTMENT

The expectation
of what he/she should do
to make us feel safe, protected, and loved.

The expectation that they should
take the right action.

The illusion that they
must do it all for us.
That they must know,
fulfill,
and tend to
our every need,
desire,
want,
and
every
whim.

So that we may, in turn, feel safe, protected, and loved.
exactly in the way we ‘think.’

And every single time…
our need (exactly as we wanted)
is unmet…

we cry with rage.

For every need that is unmet,
a disappointment is born.
a bitter memory

that builds the disconnect between me and you.
the gap widens.

and the sense of trust,
between you and me

disintegrates

slowly

but surely.

Disappointment in

you, in me,
and the rest of

humanity.

We forget…
that for every need ‘unmet’

from those we we loved most,

| those we most expected from…

a stranger shows up,

with no strings

attached:

to show

us

what true

untangled

love might look like.

And so this perfect stranger

shows us the love

we were seeking all

along.

restoring our faith.

in a humanity that still seems to love us…

even if in ways

we did not

ever

expect.

“A human — being is part of a whole, called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest… a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. The delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. — A. Einstein.
